Guinea, officially Republic of Guinea, is a country in West Africa. The base borders Guinea-Bissau and Senegal to the north, and Mali to the north and north-east; the inland part borders Côte d'Ivoire to the south-east, Liberia to the south, and Sierra Leone to the west of the southern tip.
Guinea has an abundance of natural resources. The world's second-ranking producer of bauxite, it also has extremely rich and practically untapped mineral wealth including highly promising gold deposits, reserves of high-quality diamonds, high-grade ore, nickel, chromium, copper, cobalt, limestone, and hydrocarbons. While bauxite and alumina are currently the two main exports, the Guinean government is considering encouraging the extraction of other minerals, including iron. Guinea also has a considerable hydroelectric potential. Most of the big rivers that rise in Guinea and flow through the sub-region, offer great possibilities for energy production from hydroelectric plants. The potential is assessed at over 6,100 MW of guaranteed annual energy. The industrial sector focuses essentially on the processing of agricultural produce, and includes, notably, breweries, and fruit juice and soft drinks plants. 80% of the population live in rural areas. The state favours a market economy and is determined to promote foreign investment.
